After decades as an actress, Principal Dancer and Costume Designer of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica, visual artist and art teacher. Denise Francis Robinson now describes herself simply as a creative. She leads the Light HeART workshops that help women reconnect with their creative selves.

Creativity is that voice that propels us towards our expansion, our greater self. The voice that connects us to our highest self, our highest way of being. It’s the driver of who we are.

Creativity is a way of being. It’s not a special arena that only artists get to play in. An artist is just someone who has decided to take their creativity seriously.

I always knew I was creative. As a small child I was a dreamer. As a little kid in school you’re often christened lazy. You’re not paying attention, You’re somewhere else. I always saw myself on stage acting.

My grandmother was an artist at heart, a masterful caregiver [and] a great storyteller. When grandmother would tell an Anansi story, her technique was flawless. She had all the voices, she would whistle the tunes. Some of the stories are still alive and vibrant in my head. Maybe that’s where I got the idea of being on the stage.

I’ve never seen myself in any other space. I didn’t have a choice. It’s like asking a fish, “Have you ever thought of being a monkey?”

The creative force has moved me into different areas. I’m as comfortable working with paint, mixed media, collage in my visual journal as with abstracts and symbolism that emerge through a painting practice that focuses on the experience of the process of connecting to spirit..

Explore. Experiment. Experience. That’s my big idea.
